MSR – 52nd CMA Awards

So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I will be talking about the 52nd edition of the CMA Awards.  In this review, I will be listing all the performances, award winners, & I will also give you my pick for who should have won the awards.  These are from my MSR (Midnight Star Report) which is my weekly country music video countdown which combines GAC (Great American Country), & CMT (Country Music Television).  So to just say they aren’t always my opinion on who should win, sometimes I am also looking at the stats as well.  So let’s get started right now.

The show took place on November 14th, 2018 on Wednesday.  8pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on ABC (Channel 9 where I’m from).  The show’s hosts for the 11th time Brad Paisley & Carrie Underwood.  And live from Nashville, Tennessee.

The show opens with a special moment featuring Garth Brooks with a moment of silence for the 12 victims at the Thousand Oaks shooting.

Here’s the performances for the show.

Luke Bryan joined by Luke Combs, Cole Swindell, Lindsay Ell, Chris Janson, Jon Pardi, & Ashley McBryde – What makes you country.

Jason Aldean featuring Miranda Lambert – Drowns the whiskey.

Thomas Rhett – Life changes.

Dan + Shay – Tequila.

Kelsea Ballerini – Lesson in leavin (Tribute to new country music hall of famer Dottie West).

Kelsea Ballerini – Miss me more.

Old Dominion – Hotel key.

Carrie Underwood – Love wins.

Brett Young – Mercy.

Ricky Skaggs (New country music hall of famer) with his bandmates Kentucky Thunder – Black eyed Susie.

Ricky Skaggs with Keith Urban and his friends – Highway 40 blues.

Ricky Skaggs with Brad Paisley – Country boy.

Midland – (tribute to Burt Reynolds) East bound and down.
Florida Georgia Line with Bebe Rexha – Meant to be (Classical ballroom dance version).

Luke Combs – She got the best of me.

Keith Urban – Never comin down.

Garth Brooks – Stronger than me (For Trisha Yearwood).

Pistol Annies – Got my name changed back.

Dierks Bentley featuring Brothers Osborne – Burning man.

Maren Morris, Mavis Staples, Morgan Stapleton, Marty Stuart, Dave Cobb, & Chris Stapleton – Friendship (I’ll take you there).

Brad Paisley – Bucked off (George Strait mentioned a lot during this song, and we know how Brad feels about Buck Owens).

Kacey Musgraves – Slow burn.

Eric Church – Desperate man.

Awards who actually won and what and who should win according to MSR (Midnight Star Review).

Song of the year goes to Chris Stapleton – Broken halos

I could see this one going to Jason Aldean & Miranda Lambert – Drowns the whiskey or Chris Janson – Drunk girl.  But I am ok with Stapleton getting it.

New artist of the year goes to Luke Combs.

I am happy with Luke Combs, Brett Young, or Chris Janson winning this.

Single of the year goes to Chris Stapleton – Broken halos.

I could see this award going to Drowns the whiskey or Meant to be by Florida Georgia Line featuring Bebe Rexha which has been topping the hot country songs for 50 weeks in a row now.

Vocal group of the year goes to Old Dominion. Old Dominion deserves this more than anyone else in this category.

Album of the year goes to Kacey Musgraves.  This one was a shocker.

I have never listened to this full album just the songs they play on the radio.  I seen Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, or Thomas Rhett winning this.

Musician of the year goes to Mac McAnally.

Vocal duo of the year goes to Brothers Osborne.

Can’t really disagree with this one but maybe Florida Georgia Line (FGL) could have won as well.

Male Vocalist of the year goes to Chris Stapleton.

Would have been better if it went to Dierks Bentley.  But I do enjoy Stapleton’s music.

Female Vocalist of the year goes to Carrie Underwood.

The only real challenge for her would be maybe Maren Morris.

Entertainer of the year goes to Keith Urban.

Keith is very deserving of this honor.  Very good album, & number 1 videos.  Keith puts in a lot of work and always give back.

Musical event of the year goes to David Lee Murphy featuring Kenny Chesney – Everything’s going to be alright.

Music video of the year goes to Thomas Rhett – Marry me.

On the MSR (Midnight Star Report), this video had the top spot for the whole year for a while.

So on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this show a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  There were some shocks which is very good in a show.  The performance of the night could either go to Garth Brooks’ Stronger than me, or Brad Paisley’s Bucked off.  Thanks for taking the time to read this review.  See ya all next time.
